Latvian basketball star Kristaps Porzingis has been traded from the Boston Celtics to the Atlanta Hawks in a three-team deal involving the Brooklyn Nets, finalized on June 24, 2025.

The Hawks received Porzingis along with a 2026 second-round draft pick. In return, the Celtics got forward Georges Niang and a second-round pick, while the Nets acquired guard Terance Mann and the Hawks’ No. 22 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.

This move helps the Celtics cut luxury tax costs after their 2024 NBA Finals win, where Porzingis played a key role despite injuries.

Porzingis, who joined Boston in June 2023, now heads to Atlanta. The 7-foot-3 forward averaged 20 points and 7 rebounds last season, bringing size and scoring to the Hawks’ lineup.

Atlanta’s offense, led by Trae Young, could benefit from Porzingis’ shooting and rim protection. It’s a fresh start for the Latvian big man after a championship run.

“I’m excited—this feels like the perfect scenario to recharge and help build something special in Atlanta,” said Kristaps Porzingis, Atlanta Hawks forward.

The trade shakes up the Eastern Conference. Hawks fans might see Porzingis debut soon, potentially boosting the team’s playoff push.

Porzingis, born in Liepaja, Latvia, remains a national hero. His NBA journey started with the New York Knicks in 2015, followed by stints in Dallas, Washington, and Boston.

This is his fifth team in 10 years. At 29, he’s still in his prime, with career highs in efficiency last season.

Latvian basketball enthusiasts are watching closely. The move could mean more visibility for Porzingis in a starring role.

No official word on his Hawks jersey number yet, but expect updates as training camp approaches in September 2025.

The deal reflects ongoing NBA roster tweaks post-draft. Atlanta traded away their 2025 first-rounder but gained a proven veteran.

For Boston, shedding Porzingis’ $30 million salary eases their cap situation while adding depth with Niang.

Additionally, Latvian fans are looking forward to FIBA EuroBasket 2025, where Porzingis—known as the Unicorn—is set to play a leading role for the national team.

The prestigious tournament runs from August 27 to September 14, 2025, hosted by Cyprus, Finland, Latvia, and Poland. It could showcase Porzingis’ skills on home soil and boost Latvia’s chances in the competition.
