Latvian basketball star Kristaps Porzingis is heading to the Bay Area after a blockbuster trade sent him from the Boston Celtics to the Golden State Warriors, the teams announced Thursday. The move reunites the 7-foot-2 forward with one of the NBA’s most successful franchises and gives the Warriors a proven championship contributor.
Porzingis, 30, helped the Celtics capture the 2024 NBA Championship and has been a key part of Boston’s frontcourt rotation over the past two seasons. Known for his unique combination of size, shooting range, and shot-blocking ability, he averaged 18.2 points and 6.8 rebounds per game this season while shooting 38% from three-point range.
The trade gives Golden State another versatile big man to pair with their core group, adding floor spacing and defensive length to a roster chasing another title. For Porzingis, it’s an opportunity to play in the Warriors’ system, known for maximizing the skills of players who can shoot and move without the ball.
“Kristaps brings championship experience and a skill set that fits perfectly with how we play,” Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. said in a statement. “We’re excited to welcome him to the Warriors family.”
Back home in Latvia, the news sparked celebration among basketball fans who have followed Porzingis’s journey from Liepāja to NBA stardom. Social media lit up with messages of pride and excitement about seeing their national hero in Warriors blue and gold.
Porzingis is expected to make his Warriors debut next week when Golden State hosts the Phoenix Suns at Chase Center.
