The Riga Council has announced today that public transportation will be free for motorists on Monday, to reduce traffic in snowstorm.

Your vehicle registration document will serve as a valid ticket on board of any Rigas Satiksme public transport.

The so called “Snowstorm Tickets” is the initiative of the Mayor of Riga Nils Ušakovs and have proved to be a success back in December 2012. There have not been a necessity to introduce them over the recent years, as the winters were not snow rich. This season though, the Snowstorm Tickets are back — for the convenience of the city dwellers.

The more drivers will leave their cars at home, the less will be traffic, and the quicker will be the snow cleaning works.

Nils Ušakovs, The Mayor of Riga

What do you think of the “Snowstorm Ticket” initiative? Will you use it?
