Latvian President Raimonds Vējonis has announced a prime minister candidate Wednesday — nominating Māris Kučinskis for the position.
The decision did not come easy as the President met with potential PM candidates last week and earlier this week. Meetings were held in secret – no names of potential candidates, location or time of meetings were disclosed.
The State President’s Chancellery noted that Vējonis’ informal meetings with potential candidates continued on Friday as well, but the President was not able to name a candidate late last week, postponing the decision to this week.
As it is known, Raimonds Vejonis has decided to take the initiative in the matter of selecting a PM candidate to replace Laimdota Straujuma, who resigned in December. The President chose to do this because parties of the ruling coalition have failed to reach an agreement in regards to the model of the new government.
Māris Kučinskis, 54, has previously held the posts the Mayor of Valmiera and the Minister of Local Governments and Environmental Protection.
