The IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship wrapped up recently in Switzerland, and while the Latvian national team didn’t bring home the bronze this year like that legendary 2023 run, one thing remains absolutely undefeated: the fans. The Latvian “Sixth Player” invaded the arenas, drank the beer taps dry, and out-cheered everyone else in the building.
It’s a point of national pride. Winning on the ice is great, but dominating the stands is a tradition. For weeks, the sports bars in Vecrīga were packed shoulder-to-shoulder with burgundy and white jerseys, collective heart rates spiking with every power play. It’s the one time of year when everyone in Riga becomes a tactical hockey expert.
The commitment of Latvian fans is unreal. We’re talking about people taking out loans, driving across Europe in beat-up vans, and sleeping in tents just to bang a drum in the nosebleeds. That level of passion commands respect, and it consistently makes Latvia the favorite underdog for neutrals across the globe.
Big shoutout to the boys for leaving it all on the ice, and an even bigger shoutout to the fans who traveled to make it feel like a home game. Check out more local sports culture on our sports section. We’ll be back next year, louder and ready for more.
