If you’re heading out of Riga today, ease off the pedal. Latvia’s winter speed limit is live.
From Thursday, 15 October 2026, the maximum on Latvia’s national roads is 90 km/h, Latvijas Valsts ceļi (LVC) says. Signs are being swapped today; on the Ķekava bypass that swap runs overnight into Friday.
Key facts
- National-road cap: 90 km/h from 15 October
- Exception: A2 Vidzeme motorway, Riga–Sigulda — up to 100 km/h in very good conditions (variable signs)
- When conditions worsen on that A2 stretch, the limit can drop to 90, 80 or 70 km/h
- Blank variable signs mean 90 km/h outside towns — match your speed to the weather
- Ķekava bypass signs change overnight 15–16 October
Why is Latvia dropping to 90 km/h now?
Same seasonal switch every autumn: darker evenings, wet roads, the first frost. LVC is changing the posted limits so the legal maximum fits the season. The A2 stretch to Sigulda keeps adaptive boards — electronic signs have the same force as metal ones.
What should drivers watch for around Riga?
Watch every board, not just last week’s. Between roadworks, Southern Bridge diversions, and the Vanšu Bridge plans, Pierīga already asks for patience. City limits are unchanged — this is the state-road winter package.
Drive like the season’s here. Because it is.
